Delhi: The violence over Waqf property in West Bengal's Murshidabad district is not going to stop. On Saturday, the situation in the Shamsherganj area became more frightening when an elderly man and his son were brutally murdered with sharp weapons. The deceased have been identified as Hargobind Das (74) and his son Chandan Das (40). The bodies of both were recovered from their own house stained in blood.
According to local sources, some armed assailants stormed the house of the Das family in the dead of the night. The father-son duo lost their lives while trying to stop the mob that had come with the intention of looting and destroying property. Panic gripped the area and police deployed heavy force to control the situation.
The family claimed that they had called the police several times, but no one arrived on time. If the police had shown promptness, perhaps lives could have been saved. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Farakka Hospital for post-mortem and an investigation into the matter is underway.
In a series of similar incidents, a youth, Aijaz Ahmad (21), who was hit by a bullet near Sajur Mor in Suti area on Friday, also succumbed to injuries during treatment. It is being told that he was shot by the police. The case is also under investigation and the body of the deceased has been kept at Murshidabad Medical College.
After this whole incident, BJP leader Amit Malviya and state president Sukanta Majumdar have launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Malviya tweeted that "Muslim goons brought up under the protection of Mamata" have killed innocent Hindus and now it is time for the Chief Minister to be prosecuted. Sukanta Majumdar has demanded her resignation, accusing Mamata of inciting violence and misleading the minorities.
The BJP leaders also alleged that the massive rally of minorities against the Waqf Amendment Act was held with the permission of the government, and no action was taken on the provocative speeches made there. This indicates unrest in the state. The opposition questioned why the Chief Minister maintained silence when such statements were made in the capital Kolkata.
Tension prevailed in areas like Jangipur, Suti, Dhulian, Jafrabad and Shamsherganj in Murshidabad. The administration is alert to deal with any untoward incident, but the atmosphere of fear among the people still remains.
